Clavo Cellars teams up with scouts to offer cookie pairings

Posted: Friday, Mar 17th, 2017

TEMPLETON — Last weekend, March 11-12, Clavo Cellars located at 315 S. Main St., paired up with local girl scout, Kaitlyn Adams, a junior at Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School in San Luis Obispo, to share with community members the delicious and mouthwatering combination that is wine and girl scout cookies.

Adams, who has been involved in girl scouts for the past nine years, had never approached a winery before. This year though, her season goal was to raise money for a trip to Mexico.

“Our (girl scout) troupe is heading to San Jose del Cabo this summer to help local schools and their youth,” Adams said.

Almost everyone is familiar with the age old tradition of milk and cookies, but living in such a quickly growing wine region, it comes as no surprise that the recent buzz is all about which wine to pair with which cookie.

Clavo Cellars, who bought 13 boxes from Adams, distributed and paired the cookies with wines in their tasting room.

“(Katie) approached us about the idea first, but I’m honestly pretty surprised we haven’t thought to do something like this before,” Clavo Vineyard’s tasting room and wine club manager Meghan Pahler said. “Although we’ve teamed up with other similar organizations, this was our first time pairing with a girl scout. When (she) pitched the idea though, I decided to purchase and pick cookies right there.”

That being said, before doing so it is essential to understand that there is often actually a science behind food and wine pairings. Wine and food both share four essential components: acidity, tannin, alcohol and sweetness - or lack thereof. The overall idea is to find flavor profiles that simply complement each other, either through contrasting elements or by matching similar ones.

“We bought orders of five different cookies,” Pahler said. “The infamous Thin Mints were paired with Sirah, the Carmel Delights with Petite Sirah, Samoas with Vermentino, Shortbread with Sparkling Grenache Blanc and Peanut Butter Patties with Zinfandel.”

Regardless of the combination, this pairing was definitely a new way for those with a sweet tooth to indulge in another classic treat.
